Recharge Free Gift Reward Not Applied? How to Find Out Why

A Recharge free gift or milestone reward that isn't applied can fail without an error. Check three things in order: whether the order matched the flow's trigger conditions, whether the reward landed on the next scheduled order, and whether the reward product bills at $0 without changing shipping.

What we found

Two dated snapshots from one subscription brand's Recharge and Shopify setup. The brand is anonymized, and your numbers will differ.

  • September 27, 2026 (FIXED): A subscription brand's milestone-reward flow hadn't delivered one reward across 12,260 charges; we fixed four defects and verified 11 rewards billed correctly between September 23 and 27.
  • September 22, 2026 (FOUND): Adding a $0 reward line silently raised shipping from $16.21 to $27.18 on a test order; we caught it before any customer was billed.

Why a missing reward doesn't show up as an error

A reward flow can fail and nothing looks wrong. The charge succeeds, the order ships, and nothing flags the gap. Only someone who compares the promise (a free gift at order five) with the actual order lines sees it.

It helps to know how Recharge builds the reward. According to Recharge's documentation, by default an Automate flow's trigger runs after Recharge processes each checkout and recurring order, and you can add trigger conditions to limit it to certain customers or orders. The flow's one-time node then adds a one-time product to an upcoming order. Recharge also says a one-time product is added only to the customer's next scheduled order.

So three things must be true at once: the order matches the trigger, the reward attaches to the right upcoming order, and that order bills with the line intact. A flow can only act on orders it sees after you fix it. In the store we worked on, charges that were already scheduled when an earlier fix went in billed without the reward.

Four defects found while fixing it

The count came first: no reward had billed on any of the 12,260 successful charges. Auditing our own fix then turned up four separate defects. At least two came from what we had built: the reward products' price and our check of queued charges.

  • The reward products we created were priced at full retail. Only a price setting inside the flow kept them free, so we set each product's own price to $0.00.
  • Our own check skipped at least one customer. It looked only at each customer's earliest queued charge, so a customer with two subscriptions billing a day apart never had a milestone flagged. We changed it to read every queued charge.
  • The flow rewarded subscriptions, not customers. Recharge says its smart loop evaluates each item individually rather than the entire order, so a customer with several subscriptions could be queued for the same reward more than once. We added a check that keeps the first reward and reverses the rest.
  • Rewards sat on queued charges for customers who had since canceled. Left alone, they would have billed as standalone $0 orders. We removed them.

The shipping surprise from a $0 line

A free gift can still cost the customer money. On a test order, adding the $0 reward line raised shipping from $16.21 to $27.18. We caught it before any customer was billed.

The cause was shipping profiles. The reward products we had created sat in a different profile from the real products. Shopify combines the separate rates from each profile an order touches and shows one rate at checkout, so the $0 line pulled in a second profile's rate. Weight counts too: Shopify says weight-based rates combine the weights of the individual products in the cart, so a heavy gift can move the price.

We moved the reward products into the same profile as the real products. A Shopify draft order then returned the same rate with and without the reward line. The physical reward products also carry zero weight, so in this store a physical gift adds nothing to weight-based rates.

A second trap followed. Recharge's API reference says that, unless a rate is overridden, shipping rates are fetched when a charge is created or regenerated. A charge that already had the reward line kept its old rate after the profile fix. Of the 82 queued reward charges we scanned, one still held the stale price. We built a check that compares each queued charge's saved shipping price with a live quote and re-prices any that differ.

Prove it with real charges, not a test order

A test order only proves the setup. So we read real charges back as they billed. Between September 23 and 27, 11 rewards billed correctly, each as a $0 line on the Shopify order.

Recharge's documentation says Automate isn't compatible with the Recharge API at this time. In this store the flows endpoint also refused our API token, so we couldn't read the flow's rules that way. You audit what the flow produces instead: the charges.

Eleven charges show the path works. They can't show that every future charge will, which is why the monitoring below matters.

Check this in your own store

You need read access to Recharge and your Shopify admin. Work through these steps in order.

  • Write each reward as one sentence, such as "free gift on order 5". Note whether the count is per customer or per subscription.
  • Export your successful charges. Since March 19, 2025, the Recharge API no longer returns processed charges older than 90 days. Older history stays in the Exports tool in the merchant portal.
  • Count successful charges per customer. For each customer who passed a milestone, check that the next order carries the reward line at $0.
  • Tally hits and misses. A flow can look active and still have a hit rate of zero.
  • Pull your queued charges with GET /charges?status=queued. Recharge's API reference describes one-time items as non-recurring line items on a queued charge, so upcoming milestone charges should already carry the reward. A flow fix doesn't reach charges that already exist.
  • Open the reward product in Shopify. Check the price is $0.00, the weight, the shipping profile, and that customers can't buy it from the storefront.
  • Place one test order at a milestone, with and without the reward line, and compare the shipping lines.
  • Look for a second route. If a person or a fulfillment partner also adds gifts by hand, one customer can get two. In this store, physical rewards had a manual route too, so a double reward stayed possible. As of September 27 we treated that as open, not fixed.

What to monitor after the fix

Run these checks weekly. They stand in for an error message the flow may never send.

  • Milestone charges against reward lines. The two counts should match.
  • Queued charges whose saved shipping price differs from a live quote.
  • Reward lines on canceled subscriptions.
  • More than one reward line for the same customer and milestone.
  • Any edit to the flow. Re-check the queued charges the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my Recharge free gift being applied?
Start with the flow's trigger conditions, because they decide which orders enter the flow. Next, check where the reward landed: Recharge adds a one-time product only to the next scheduled order. Then look for overlap. Recharge evaluates active flows in priority order and several can run on the same charge, and Automate overwrites the changes of a legacy workflow that uses the same trigger. Last, check the reward product's price and shipping profile.
Can I read my Recharge Automate flow through the API?
Recharge's documentation says Automate isn't compatible with the Recharge API at this time, and in the store we worked on the flows endpoint refused our token. Audit what the flow produces instead. Compare each customer's charge count with the reward line on the order after each milestone, and check your queued charges before they bill.
Does a $0 reward change what the customer pays for shipping?
It can. Shopify combines the shipping rates of every profile an order touches, and its weight-based rates combine product weights. A free gift in the wrong profile, or one with weight, can raise the rate. On one test order, shipping went from $16.21 to $27.18 until we fixed the profile.
