Is Recharge Plus Worth $499 a Month? Test It Yourself

Only if you will use something that only Plus has, or your volume is high enough for Plus's lower transaction rate to cover the $400 monthly gap. When we tested a $499-a-month Recharge Plus pitch on a live subscription account, 5 of the 8 pitched features were already on the $99 Starter plan. Test every feature on your own account first.

What we found

One of our clients is a subscription brand on Shopify with a paying subscriber base. It has been a Morsegrid retainer client since March 2026. Recharge pitched it a Plus upgrade at $499 a month against its $99 Starter plan. We tested the pitch against the live account and Recharge's documentation before anyone spent a dollar. We read Recharge's public pages again on 14 October 2026, and the plan figures below carry that date.

  • 5 of the 8 pitched features were already available on Starter, checked feature by feature.
  • The locked checkout upsells were gated by Shopify Plus, the store platform, not by any Recharge plan.
  • A live test showed a milestone-rewards path could run on the existing Starter plan, at roughly a tenth of the pitched cost.
  • We profiled six alternative platforms and rejected a switch. Migrating would have moved over 300 live payment tokens for no real gain.

The pitch is a list of names and a price

A software bill is a fixed cost that renews every month, and a pitch asks you to raise it. Check the pitch before you agree.

Recharge's public pricing page, read on 14 October 2026, lists Starter at $99 a month and Plus at $499 a month. The pitch we tested used the same two prices. The gap is $400 a month, or $4,800 a year. Plus on its own is $5,988 a year, before transaction fees. The page's FAQ also says Plus and Custom plans run on 12-month terms, and that you can downgrade when the term commitment expires.

Only your own account shows which of the pitched features you already have.

Test each feature on your own account

We tested the pitch against the live account and the documentation instead of arguing with it. You can run the same kind of check. For every feature on the list, it comes down to three questions.

  • Does the vendor's documentation put this feature on our current plan?
  • Can we open it and switch it on in the live account?
  • Does it work when we run it on a test customer?

What Starter already includes, per the plan page

A feature counts as included only when all three answers are yes. The pitch you receive will differ from ours, so start with the vendor's public plan page. On 14 October 2026, Recharge's page lists these as Starter features: the subscription widget on the product page, the customer portal, upsell and cross-sell tools, Smart Cancellation Prevention, Failed Payment Recovery, Win Backs, automated workflows, gifting and analytics.

The same page lists what Plus adds: customizable bundles and tiered discounts, ConciergeSMS, Rewards, Referrals, the JavaScript SDK and Storefront API, and hands-on implementation and migration support. ConciergeSMS also carries a fee of $0.03 per message segment in the US and Canada and $0.06 internationally. Recharge's help center names Bundles, Rewards and Referrals as the Plus examples.

Two companies sell something called Plus, and that matters here. The locked checkout upsells in our pitch were gated by Shopify Plus, not by Recharge. Recharge's help center says Checkout Upsell is only available for stores on Shopify Plus. Shopify's developer docs say checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan, and no Recharge upgrade changes that.

Paying one vendor for a feature that another vendor's plan controls is an easy mistake to make from a pitch.

A live test of the cheaper route

Eight pitched features less the five already on Starter leaves three. For each one, three questions decide: will you use it in the next quarter, can the stack you already pay for reach the same outcome, and can a live test prove it?

In our case, a live test showed that a milestone-rewards path could run on the existing Starter plan, at roughly a tenth of the pitched cost.

A live test counts for more than a plan on paper. A route that only exists in a spreadsheet has not been shown to work.

Check this in your own store

Take one sheet per pitch and make one row per feature, with these columns:

  • Feature: the vendor's own name for it, copied from the pitch.
  • Pitch says: the plan it claims to need.
  • Plan page says: what the vendor's public pricing page lists, with the date you read it.
  • Help center says: the "before you start" lines on the feature's own help article. This is where another vendor's gate shows up.
  • Your Recharge admin shows: whether you can open it and switch it on.
  • Test result: what happened on one test customer, with the date.
  • Gated by: your vendor's plan, your store platform's plan, or nothing.

Read the fee lines too. Recharge's pricing page lists Starter at 1.49% plus 19 cents per transaction and Plus at 1.34% plus 19 cents. Its help-center billing article lists Starter at 1.25%, so use the rate on your own invoice. Recharge bills fees on the total processed amount, including shipping, taxes and refunded orders.

Then price the gap. Multiply the monthly fee difference by 12, then subtract what Plus's lower transaction rate would save on your yearly processed volume. Compare that net figure with the features still missing after the test. At the pricing page's rates, the 0.15-point difference between 1.49% and 1.34% covers the $400 monthly gap only at about $266,700 a month in processed volume.

Confirm the Plus term in writing before you sign. Recharge's pricing page says Plus and Custom plans run on 12-month terms. Its help-center billing article calls Starter month-to-month, says Custom plans carry contract terms, and does not mention a term for Plus. It also tells you to check your Billing page if you are unsure whether you are under contract.

When to reject a switch

A pitch for a bigger plan sometimes arrives next to a second option: move to another app. We profiled six alternative platforms for the same client and still rejected a switch, because a migration would have moved over 300 live payment tokens for no real gain.

Count what moves before you compare feature lists. A migration moves your subscribers' live payment tokens. If the new platform gives you nothing that your current plan plus a tested workaround cannot, the move adds cost and risk and nothing else.

Plus is the right call when you will use something only Plus has and a live test shows no cheaper route reaches the same result, or when your volume makes its lower transaction rate cover the gap. Then you can weigh the $400 monthly gap against numbers you have measured.

Frequently asked questions

Is Recharge Plus worth it?
It is worth it only if you will use something that only Plus has, or your volume is high enough for its lower transaction rate to cover the $400 monthly gap. On 14 October 2026, Recharge's pricing page lists customizable bundles and tiered discounts, ConciergeSMS, Rewards, Referrals and the JavaScript SDK and Storefront API as Plus additions. If you will use one of them, test whether a cheaper route does the same job before you pay. If you will use none and the rate saving does not cover the gap, stay on Starter.
How do I check what is already on my plan?
Line up the pitch's feature list against Recharge's public pricing page and the help article for each feature. Then open each setting in your Recharge admin and run it on a test subscription. Write down the date and the result for each one, and check your Billing page for your contract status.
Should I switch subscription apps instead?
Only if you can name a feature you need that your current plan and a tested workaround cannot deliver. A switch moves your subscribers' live payment tokens. We profiled six alternatives for one client and rejected the move: it would have moved over 300 live payment tokens for no real gain.
