Associate AI Engineer

Who we are

Morsegrid fixes what breaks when an ecommerce brand grows. We find the cause in a brand's own Shopify, helpdesk and ERP data first, then build the fix and train the team to run it.

We are a small, senior-led team with people in the USA, Bangladesh, Ireland and New Zealand. Trainees learn on real client systems next to senior people. We care about craft, plain communication and work that keeps running after we hand it over.

About the role

We're hiring Associate AI Engineers to build AI-native systems for real client businesses. This is a first commercial seat and a training seat, not a junior version of a senior job.

You will be taught how we build: diagnose the problem first, push complexity into deterministic code, and let AI do only the reasoning that code can't.

You do not need commercial experience, but you do need to read and write Python and have built something that runs.

What you'll achieve

  • Write Python scripts. Write and maintain Python scripts for deterministic work: API calls, data processing, file and sheet operations, and scheduled jobs.
  • Build LLM steps. Build LLM-powered steps inside larger pipelines (classification, extraction, routing, drafting), always behind a defined output contract.
  • Wire n8n automations. Wire automations in n8n and connect them to the scripts you write.
  • Write evals. Write evals and guard checks that prove a change didn't break what it was meant to improve.
  • Turn SOPs into code. Turn a written SOP into working code without needing every step spelled out twice.
  • Document your work. Document what you build so the next person can run it without asking you.
  • Fix your breakages. Fix your own breakages, then update the runbook so the same failure can't recur silently.

Skills you'll need to bring

  • No degree requirement and no minimum years of commercial experience.
  • At least one project you built yourself that runs, hosted, scheduled, or used by someone other than you.
  • Evidence you can finish something, not just start it.
  • Python: functions, error handling, JSON, and calling REST APIs.
  • Git basics: branch, commit, push, and open a pull request.
  • Comfort reading API documentation and working out request shapes without a tutorial.
  • Enough SQL or spreadsheet logic to reason about unfamiliar data.
  • Any exposure to LLM APIs, n8n, Make, JavaScript, or TypeScript is a plus, not a requirement.
  • You read the error message before asking the question.
  • You state a blocker within hours, not at the deadline.
  • You can explain what a script does to someone who'll never read the code.
  • You're comfortable being told the work is wrong, and curious about why.

Nice to haves

  • Any published work: a repo, a technical write-up, a small tool other people use.
  • Experience with Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini APIs in a personal project.
  • Exposure to Shopify, Google Workspace APIs, or ecommerce data.
  • Having automated something in your own life because doing it manually annoyed you.

Benefits

  • Paid training period, you're taught on the clock, not on your own time
  • Defined path to AI Engineer and Senior AI Engineer, gated on capability, not time served
  • Remote-first, full-time, async-friendly
  • Direct technical mentorship from the team that builds our client systems

How to apply

Include one thing you've built, with a one-paragraph note on what broke and how you fixed it. A repository whose README says "coming soon" will not be reviewed.

A note on AI

You don't need deep AI expertise for every role, but we do expect everyone here to be curious and to use AI as a real collaborator in their work. When AI fluency is a core requirement, the role says so in the skills list. People who do well here use AI to think better and check its work before it ships.

Equal opportunity

We hire people from a wide range of backgrounds. If you're excited about this role but don't meet every point, we still encourage you to apply. Morsegrid does not discriminate on the basis of any legally protected characteristic. If you need an adjustment during the application process, tell us and we will make it.
